Facebookland is awash with posts about the YouTube video of Hawkeye, the faithful pooch who lay by the casket of his master, Navy SEAL Jon Tumilson, throughout Tumilson’s memorial service Aug. 19. You can read a story about it here.
It’s a beautiful moment, beautifully captured. But I can’t help but think about what the reaction would be from MY pets if they were suddenly to find themselves without me. I think they’d mostly be miffed at the interruption in their personal service. It’s so hard to find good help these days.
Exhibit A: My 29th birthday, most of which I spent lying flat on the floor, having thrown out my back the day before doing heaven knows what; probably tying my shoes. The cats, responding with their feline sixth sense to my inner cries of pain and helplessness, respond by coming to stand on me.
If Little Timmy were to fall in a well over at our house, I’m guessing not even the guinea pig would notice. Not even if he tripped over him in the process.
Pets are supposed to know if you’re having a bad day, right? Come and curl up next to you and lay their furry heads on your knee and look at you soulfully, right?
Yeahhhno. If anything, I think the dog would demand to be let in and out even more often, since obviously I’m not doing anything important.
But I’ve long thought that the members of our four-footed crew are, on average, a few kibbles short of a food dish. Maybe some of you have better pet sympathy stories to tell?
